Government Transfers Bitfinex Hack-linked Bitcoin to Coinbase

The U.S. government is once again making headlines in the blockchain space by transferring approximately $606,000 worth of bitcoin (BTC), valued at $74,675.50, to Coinbase Prime. These specific coins are associated with Ilya Lichtenstein, who orchestrated a significant hack on Bitfinex, as tracked by Arkham.

While transfers to exchanges can indicate potential sales, they may also signify routine wallet management or custody adjustments without any intent to sell.

The 8 BTC linked to the Bitfinex breach — which resulted in Lichtenstein absconding with 119,756 BTC — are under a court order mandating their return to Bitfinex rather than being liquidated by the U.S. Treasury.

In early 2025, federal courts mandated that these assets be returned to Bitfinex as part of an in-kind restitution agreement. The exchange plans to use the recovered funds to redeem all outstanding Recovery Right Tokens and allocate at least 80% of any remaining proceeds towards buying back and retiring its UNUS SED LEO token.

The original hack occurred in August 2016 when Lichtenstein executed over 2,000 unauthorized transactions, transferring 119,756 BTC. At that time, the value was approximately $72 million, which would now be around $8.9 billion.

Lichtenstein engaged in extensive money laundering through crypto mixers, darknets, and various cryptocurrencies, as well as investing in gold over several years before being apprehended by authorities in 2022 with a portion of the stolen BTC, valued then at $3.6 billion.

In 2024, Lichtenstein received a 60-month federal prison sentence but was released in January 2026 under the First Step Act, expressing gratitude to President Donald Trump on X.

The seized coins remain under U.S. government control. Last year, it was announced that these assets would be part of a national strategic bitcoin reserve. Currently, the government holds around $24.54 billion worth of bitcoin, $146 million in ether, and various other cryptocurrencies.
