Former UK PM Criticizes Economic Trajectory and Advocates for Bitcoin

Liz Truss, who served as the U.K.’s shortest-serving Prime Minister, has criticized the nation’s economy for stagnating over decades. She attributes many of these issues to a lack of stable currency and the debasement of sterling due to inflation and excessive printing of money.

During her brief 45-day tenure in 2022, Truss expressed increased interest in bitcoin (BTC), which some see as a hedge against currency debasement. Her engagement with cryptocurrency began during her time at the Treasury around two years prior to July 2019, when she served as Chief Secretary.

In an interview with CoinDesk, Truss emphasized that many of Britain’s economic problems stem from currency debasement and lack of sound money. She criticized how discussions on monetary policy have become taboo within academia and government, despite their impact on the economy. Truss sees bitcoin as a counter to centralized control, which she believes is driven by regulatory and taxation policies.

Truss warns that the U.K.’s economic path is ‘very negative’, pointing to factors like weak growth, increasing state control, and ineffective monetary policy contributing to long-term decline. She argues high taxes, regulation, and energy costs deter entrepreneurship, creating a disincentive for work in Britain.

Reflecting on the market instability following Chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng’s 2022 mini-budget, she contends it revealed pre-existing economic vulnerabilities rather than created them. Highlighting risks from leveraged pension strategies, Truss asserts these issues were previously unrecognized.

Currently outside of government roles, Truss is focused on fostering a political movement through initiatives like CPAC UK. This three-day conference aims to unite activists and entrepreneurs within the ‘sovereignty and liberty’ movement. She stresses the urgency for change, stating: ‘There are two choices, either we’re finished or we change it.’
