Panic's Playdate Platform Restricts Generative AI in Creative Content

Panic, the creator of the Playdate handheld gaming device, has declared a prohibition on generative AI tools used for art, music, and writing within its digital marketplace. However, they continue to allow AI-powered coding tools.

The policy delineates between creative and technical uses of AI. Panic’s revised terms now ban third-party games featuring AI-generated content in their submissions while requiring developers who use AI-assisted coding tools to disclose such usage for transparency with customers.

“Playdate Catalog has always mandated that developers disclose any AI involvement in game submissions, an aspect that remains unchanged. However, starting this month, the Playdate Catalog will no longer accept third-party games featuring generatively created art, music, or writing,” stated Panic co-founder Cabel Sasser to Game Developer.

The company distinguishes itself by setting a unique precedent in gaming distribution with its distinctive handheld console—featuring a monochrome screen, a fold-out hand crank, and an indie-focused game library—setting it apart from major industry players.

“We believe we’re pioneering this approach (and possibly the only?) digital game storefront to implement such a policy. Platforms like Steam, Nintendo eShop, PlayStation Store, and even Itch still permit AI-generated content,” Sasser remarked, noting that this move was “a crucial step for enhancing game quality and supporting our community.”

This change follows the revelation that Wheelsprung, part of Playdate’s curated Season 2 lineup, incorporated ChatGPT and GitHub Copilot in its coding and writing processes.

Sasser admitted to an oversight, revealing toExplast year that Panic’s team underestimated a Season 2 developer employing large language models. He termed this assumption “naive” and accepted responsibility for the game bypassing their review process.

Since launching in 2022, Playdate has positioned itself as a niche gaming device, focusing on its unique design and quirky features instead of competing with high-end devices. The Catalog serves as the primary distribution channel for games tailored to this specialized platform. Unlike major platforms that have largely avoided addressing AI-generated content, Panic’s explicit policy marks a first in differentiating between types of AI use in game development.

Panic has introduced more stringent standards for its forthcoming curated collection. In a post on Bluesky, the publisher confirmed that Playdate Season 3 will exclude any games utilizing generative AI in any form.

“We can confirm that it was mandatory for all Season 3 developers to ensure no AI was used in their games,” the company stated, specifying this applies to art, music, writing, and indeed, coding.”
