On Wednesday, the U.S. Department of Labor introduced a new website designed to assist workers and employers in developing artificial intelligence (AI) skills and expanding apprenticeship programs focused on AI. Known as the AI in Registered Apprenticeship Innovation Portal, the platform was unveiled during National Apprenticeship Week as an all-in-one resource for organizations aiming to enhance AI literacy and incorporate or upgrade AI-related skills into their apprenticeship programs.
“Our commitment is to ensure every American can prosper in our rapidly evolving workforce, significantly influenced by artificial intelligence,” Acting Secretary of Labor Keith Sonderling stated in a release. He described the initiative as a crucial step toward preparing the U.S. workforce for future job opportunities.
This move follows growing concerns that AI might disrupt or replace jobs across various sectors, increasing pressure on both government bodies and employers to offer training and transition pathways.
The apprenticeship program builds upon the department’s AI Literacy Framework, introduced in February, which provides a blueprint for embedding AI competencies into apprenticeships via resources, industry-specific tools, and adaptable learning paths.
The portal categorizes its offerings into three sections: enhancing AI skills within Registered Apprenticeships, fostering AI skill development by sector, and integrating AI into existing or novel apprenticeship models. It features tailored training modules for sectors such as education, finance, healthcare, and advanced manufacturing.
“This launch underscores this Administration’s dedication to equipping American workers and businesses for an economy driven by AI,” Assistant Secretary for Employment and Training Henry Mack remarked in a statement. “By supplying employers with the resources needed to formulate AI-ready apprenticeship programs and empowering workers with relevant skills, we are actively shaping tomorrow’s workforce today.”
The department highlighted that employers can utilize the portal to join established national apprenticeship schemes, create new ones for AI-centric roles, or modify current programs to encompass AI-related competencies.
This announcement aligns with the broader national AI agenda promoted by the Trump administration, which includes a White House policy framework unveiled in March. This framework advocates for federal AI standards, enhanced infrastructure, and a cohesive national strategy addressing workforce development, child safety, innovation, free speech, among other issues as businesses and government agencies adapt to AI’s swift integration across industries.
“The Trump Administration is dedicated to leading the global AI race, ushering in a new era of prosperity, economic competitiveness, and enhanced national security for Americans,” the White House stated. “Achieving these objectives necessitates a pragmatic national policy framework that fosters American innovation while ensuring all citizens benefit from this technological transformation.”
