The letter calls for an immediate halt on using Google AI in military contexts, with the workers stating: “We want to see AI benefit humanity; not to see it being used in inhumane or extremely harmful ways.” Among the signatories are over 18 senior staff members, including principals, directors, and vice presidents, who express specific concerns about Google’s cloud computing and machine learning tools potentially supporting lethal autonomous weapons. They are seeking more transparency on existing Pentagon contracts and advocate for a permanent ethics board with employee representation to evaluate future military collaborations.
Google employees reference the company’s 2018 exit from Project Maven—a Pentagon initiative that involved AI in drone footage analysis—as an example of rejecting military work based on ethical considerations.
This action follows a prominent conflict between the Pentagon and Anthropic, where the Department of Defense ended its contract with the AI startup two months ago after it refused to eliminate restrictions related to domestic surveillance and fully autonomous weapons. The Defense Secretary subsequently labeled Anthropic as a supply chain risk, leading the White House to instruct federal agencies to phase out its tools, though a federal judge temporarily blocked this ban in March.

Despite tensions between Anthropic and the U.S. government, the NSA reportedly gained access to Mythos Preview, an AI model restricted by Anthropic to a limited group of researchers and cybersecurity entities.
