Monday’s announcements from Microsoft and OpenAI revealed a significant shift in their partnership, with Microsoft maintaining its licensing of OpenAI’s technology until 2032 but ending the exclusive agreement. This change permits OpenAI to offer its products through any cloud provider, thus terminating Microsoft’s prior exclusive status.
According to the revised terms, revenue sharing from OpenAI will persist for Microsoft until 2029, although other such arrangements are discontinued. The updated contract also omits language concerning artificial general intelligence (AGI), which could have altered the partnership dynamics if OpenAI reached AGI. Presently, Microsoft’s investment in OpenAI is valued over $135 billion.
Despite these changes, Microsoft continues to hold a license for OpenAI’s intellectual property related to models and products until 2032. This ensures ongoing access to critical technology while granting OpenAI greater autonomy.
This restructuring aligns with Microsoft’s strategic shift to broaden its AI collaborations. Earlier this year, the company reduced dependency on OpenAI by acquiring models from Anthropic, a competitor. Furthermore, Microsoft recently launched Copilot Researcher, an innovative tool that integrates OpenAI’s GPT and Anthropic’s Claude, demonstrating robust results.
OpenAI secured $110 billion in new funding from Amazon, SoftBank, and Nvidia earlier this year. Following this development, both companies emphasized their enduring alliance despite OpenAI’s expanding network of partners. In February, they declared: “Microsoft and OpenAI continue to work closely across research, engineering, and product development, building on years of deep collaboration and shared success.” They reiterated Microsoft’s exclusive license and access to OpenAI’s intellectual property.
As for the market impact, Microsoft’s stock (MSFT) has seen a slight dip since Monday morning, trading at $423 per share—a decrease of about 0.3% thus far.
