OpenAI Reports 40% Enterprise Revenue Growth Amid Shift to Agentic Workflows

OpenAI’s enterprise segment now accounts for over 40% of its total revenue, the company disclosed. It is on track to match consumer revenue by the end of 2026.

The AI giant reached $25 billion in annualized revenue in February, marking an increase from $20 billion at the close of 2025.

“I’ve never witnessed such rapid and widespread conviction across industries,” stated Denise Dresser, OpenAI’s Chief Revenue Officer. Previously with Salesforce for over a decade and later leading Slack, Dresser shared these insights in a Wednesday note.

Leading companies have evolved from using AI for tasks like drafting emails or summarizing documents to deploying what Dresser describes as “teams of agents.” These are groups of AI systems that collaborate, maintain context across sessions, and function within business tools autonomously. The focus has shifted from whether to use AI to determining the optimal number of agents.

OpenAI’s enterprise agent platform was launched to expand its user base beyond retail consumers, who still form the core revenue stream. Codex, its AI coding tool, now boasts over 3 million users, up from near zero at the quarter’s start. February saw paying business users rise to 9 million from 5 million in August, with weekly active users across all products hitting 910 million.

The company also introduced ChatGPT Agent, capable of planning trips, booking hotels, researching competitors, generating slide decks, and placing orders independently.

Despite the buzz around agentic AI, Dresser emphasized that companies need a straightforward integration method without overhauling their existing structures.

“What’s still missing for most companies is just an easy way to harness agents as team members who can operate seamlessly within businesses,” she noted. OpenAI aims its agent platform to address this gap.

OpenAI recently recruited Peter Steinberger, founder of the popular open-source agentic AI platform OpenClaw, signaling a focus not solely on corporate clients. CEO Sam Altman has positioned multi-agent systems as central to OpenAI’s forthcoming product phase, with enterprise adoption trends supporting this direction.

The company is gearing up for an IPO, with CFO Sarah Friar confirming that retail investors will participate in the allocation. OpenAI anticipates reaching $85 billion in revenue by 2030, contingent on agents becoming the default mode of business interaction with AI, rather than just a supplementary feature.
