ClearBank Europe is set to begin offering euro- and U.S. dollar-pegged stablecoins after becoming the first Dutch credit institution approved under the European Union’s Markets in Crypto Assets (MiCA) regulation to provide crypto services.
The bank, which manages over $13 billion in assets for more than 270 institutional clients and 1.7 million individual customers, received confirmation from the Dutch Authority for the Financial Markets (AFM). This approval allows ClearBank to operate as a crypto asset service provider (CASP) without needing an additional license, facilitating digital asset services within a regulated environment.
Clients will now have the capability to convert fiat currencies into stablecoins and back, leveraging traditional clearing systems integrated with blockchain networks for faster settlements and enhanced cross-border transactions. The bank plans to utilize Circle Internet’s Mint platform to provide institutional access to EURC and USDC, stablecoins pegged to the euro and U.S. dollar respectively.
“Becoming a crypto-asset service provider under MiCAR enables us to integrate digital asset capabilities into a regulated clearing environment for the first time, positioning us at the forefront of this new era of digital clearing,” stated Tristan Kirchner, CEO of ClearBank Europe.
This rollout signifies ClearBank’s initial venture into digital clearing in Europe. The bank emphasized that this initiative is part of a larger strategy to merge banking infrastructure with digital asset markets, including ongoing collaborations in the U.K. with Coinbase (COIN).
In January, ClearBank selected Taurus as its digital asset infrastructure provider to bolster its expansion into stablecoin-related services across the U.K. and Europe. This followed an earlier announcement of joining the Circle Payment Network, which aims to facilitate near-instant global value transfers using blockchain technology.
