Google DeepMind Enhances Robotic Intelligence with New AI Model

On Tuesday, Google DeepMind unveiled Gemini Robotics-ER 1.6, an advanced AI model that boosts the cognitive abilities of robots to perform intricate real-world tasks by enhancing their embodied reasoning capabilities. Specializing in spatial comprehension, task planning, and success detection, this model signifies a major leap forward in AI-driven robotics, potentially hastening the adoption of autonomous systems in enterprises.

Gemini Robotics-ER 1.6 surpasses both its predecessor and Gemini 3.0 Flash in spatial and physical reasoning tasks. The ability to interpret complex gauges and sight glasses was developed through Google DeepMind’s collaboration with Boston Dynamics to meet specific industrial demands.

In tests for identifying safety hazards, the model achieved a 6% improvement in text-based scenarios and a 10% enhancement in video-based ones over Gemini 3.0 Flash. These enhanced capabilities are now accessible to developers via the Gemini API and Google AI Studio.

The real-world application of this model is already progressing. Boston Dynamics has incorporated both Gemini and Gemini Robotics ER 1.6 into its Orbit AIV-Learning platform, which became operational for enrolled customers on April 8.

“With features like instrument reading and more reliable task reasoning, Spot can now autonomously perceive, comprehend, and respond to real-world challenges,” stated Marco da Silva, VP and GM of Spot at Boston Dynamics.

This collaboration marks a transition from experimental AI research toward practical industrial applications. The improved spatial reasoning and instrument-reading abilities could allow robots to handle maintenance, inspection, and monitoring tasks that previously required human supervision.

Google highlighted that the partnership capitalizes on Boston Dynamics’ established role in commercial robotics, where Spot robots are already active in construction sites and industrial facilities. Merging advanced AI with established hardware platforms signifies a convergence poised to expedite the deployment of autonomous systems across various industries.

Decrypthas previously reported on Google’s evolving AI robotics capabilities, including the development of web-searching robots, as well as Boston Dynamics’ announcement of its commercial Atlas humanoid robot.
