Meta Shifts Focus: From Cartoon Avatars to Photorealistic AI of Zuckerberg

In a notable change from his previous digital representation, Mark Zuckerberg has been involved in the development of a photorealistic AI clone designed for interaction with Meta employees. Following an August 2022 post featuring his Horizon Worlds avatar—a blocky figure likened by Kotaku to “a legless knock-off of a Nintendo Mii with the eyes of a corpse”—Zuckerberg has moved towards creating a more lifelike digital presence.

According to a Financial Times report, Meta is now developing an AI-powered 3D version of its CEO intended for genuine conversations. Zuckerberg himself is overseeing the training and testing process, as informed by four sources familiar with the project. The AI will mimic his mannerisms, vocal patterns, public statements, and strategic insights, aiming to deepen employees’ connection to the founder through realistic interactions.

This initiative marks a departure from Meta’s earlier metaverse efforts, which were criticized for their lackluster avatars. Superintelligence Labs, a new division at Meta, is spearheading this project. The development faces technical challenges due to the significant computing power required for seamless and responsive engagement. In line with these efforts, Meta acquired voice technology firms PlayAI and WaveForms last year. The company’s capital expenditure forecast for 2026 ranges from $115 billion to $135 billion, a substantial increase from previous years.

Meta recently unveiled Muse Spark, the inaugural model from Superintelligence Labs, noted for its health reasoning and visual understanding capabilities. This announcement led to a 7% rise in share prices. Internally, employees are encouraged to utilize AI tools through open-source software like OpenClaw, which includes exercises on system design and ‘vibe coding.’

The contrast with past metaverse ventures is stark; Horizon Worlds faced significant challenges, leading to what Decrypt described as a “quality lockdown” in 2022. Reality Labs’ expenses were substantial, with $10.2 billion reported in 2021 alone. The shift towards photorealistic AI aims to either enhance employee engagement with leadership or increase oversight.
